The Music Tree was established in 2004 and now caters for over 400 children a week.

Sessions are held weekly in Launceston and are also offered on a one-off basis for special events such as playgroups.

Tonya NorrisTonya is the owner/director of The Music Tree.

She began playing guitar at the age of 7 and sat examinations through the London based Trinity College of Music. During this time she also studied Music Theory and Piano. She then went on to do an Associate Diploma of Music at the University of Tasmania. Since this time Tonya has also branched out to playing the harp, the ukulele and has even been known to have a go at the banjo.

Tonya's teaching practice began when she was 18 and gradually grew to become a full time job. As well as private teaching Tonya has tutored in a number of local schools including Scotch Oakburn College where she continues to teach piano to this day.

Tonya has performed with the St. Cecilia School of Music orchestra as well as in a number of duos and ensembles.

Tonya has always enjoyed the challenge of teaching young students and after the arrival of her first child in 2002 decided to move into the area of early childhood music. Since then The Music Tree has grown into the success it is today. In 2011 Tonya ran the Early Childhood Music program for Trevallyn Primary School. The Music Tree also ran the East Launceston Primary Music Program for Kindergarten children and has a regular program at the Pilgrim Childcare Centre.

Tonya is committed to ongoing professional development and regularly attends conferences and workshops throughout Australia and is thus able to constantly stimulate her students with new ideas and materials. Tonya is convinced she has the perfect job - offering education while singing, dancing, dressing up, playing instruments, being silly and having lots of fun with young children – fantastic!

Jeanette BevanBritish-born Jeanette has been playing the piano since the age of 4 and read music at Royal Holloway College, London University.

She freelanced as a violinist in numerous orchestras in London and around the UK, working with such artists as Yehudi Menuhin, Julian Lloyd Webber, Ron Goodwin and Sir George Martin.

Steadily she became more involved in arts administration and management in a number of roles including MCA Music Publishing, BBC Radio 3, Westminster Abbey (Music Co-ordinator), and Hyperion Records (Publicity Manager) where she particularly enjoyed working with pianists Angela Hewitt, Stephen Hough, Piers Lane and Marc-André Hamelin, and composer Arvo Pärt.

In Australia her work has included ABC Classic FM, the Sydney Opera House and the Ovation Channel, and more recently, Jeanette has been enjoying life as a 'stay at home mum' to daughter Holly, whilst continuing to practice and teach piano. Jeanette has been attending The Music Tree for the past couple of years with Holly and is really excited about taking on a teaching role within the school.

Amy PattersonAmy began playing the flute at the age of 9 and the piano at the age of 10 and has sat examinations through Trinity College of London to Diploma level in piano. She has also studied and sat theory exams.

Starting her teaching career at the age of 18, Amy has built her love of music up to a full time career teaching at both public and private schools in Launceston. Also during this time Amy has accompanied choirs including an International Children's Choir which has taken her overseas to perform. This amongst many other performances within Tasmania has made her feel privileged and grateful for the opportunity to work with children both one on one and in group situations.

Amy is currently teaching at Scotch Oakburn Junior and Senior School part time as the arrival of her 2 year old has taken precedence! Amy is new to The Music Tree for 2012 and is looking forward to embracing a new direction in teaching children.

Louise McGeeLouise has been in the fitness industry for the last 5 years. She has a diploma in fitness and is a certified fitness instructor and personal trainer. She also has experience in the dance and childcare industry. Lou loves to dance and her favourite class to teach is Zumba.

Lou currently runs her own children's business called Mini Moves, classes that involve incorporating fitness, co-ordination and social skills into a fun environment.

Lou can't wait to start teaching dancing at The Music Tree. She will also be offering dance parties for birthdays or other events such as playgroups as well as running a school music program where you can book anything from a single session for just one class to letting her organise your entire school social – stress free for teachers and staff!

Lou is very passionate about being able to help children with their goals, be it dance, fitness, or just learning how to be in an environment where they can be themselves and be truly happy. She aspires to nurture and create a love of dance in the children entrusted in her care and is very excited about combining dance, dressing up, performing, learning and having lots of fun.

Adrienne GregoryAdrienne is the mother of two girls who are nine and six, both of whom love craft. Whilst she doesn't consider herself very artistic she is enthusiastic and loves it when her girls finish something they have made together. They are so proud!

Adrienne is known at school as the "Party Queen" putting on amazing creative parties for her children. In 2011 she has also been involved with running craft at The Children's Expo and running the children's craft for the Carnivale after the Christmas parade.

Sometimes craft is not practical or affordable and can be too messy or take up too much room at your home. Craft at the library or at playgroup can be too crowded, loud and sometimes stressful. All good reasons why we are offering craft classes for 3-5 year olds. Focusing on fun and creativity classes will be run in blocks of 4-5 lessons. Projects will be themed ie jungle, sea, fairytales, toys, Easter, Mother's Day, and Christmas etc. Some cooking may also be involved. For more information see our Classes page.

Craft Party Boxes are another idea we are launching this year. The idea is to provide you with the staples for a craft party so the kids can make something and take it home. For example, the pirate box option comes with a kit for making a hat, eye patch and parrot. Extra options are a beard, telescope and treasure map. The kit comes in a treasure chest that can be used for a treasure hunt or perhaps a piñata. Fairy kit comes with supplies to make items such as tiara, wand jewellery etc. This also comes in a treasure box – girly of course. Other options will be available. Prices on application. For more information see our Parties page.

Judith began playing piano at the age of 4 and her love of music led her to gain Grade 8 Piano, Percussion and Clarinet and eventually study percussion at the University of Glasgow.

After moving to Tasmania, Judith now teaches instruments at Lilydale School and is the musical director of Launceston Railway Silver Band.

Judith is the happy mum of two little girls and is looking forward to combining her love of working with children and music with The Music Tree.
